A

Achilles Tendonitis - inflammation of the Achilles tendon on the back of the ankle or heel.

Athletes Foot - fungal infection of the foot.

Acute - red, itching sometimes burning rash commonly found between the toes.

Chronic - dry, white, flaky skin on the bottom of the foot w/ some red discoloration noted between the dry skin.

B

Bunion - curvature of the big toe toward the smaller toes w/ a bump at the base of the big toe ( Click here for more information.)

C

Callus - hard thick skin on the bottom of the foot.

Cellulitis - bacterial infection of the lower extremity.

Clavus - hard thick skin on the bottom of the foot.

Corn - hard thick skin on the top of the toes.

G

Ganglion Cyst - Gel fluid filled cyst that comes from irritation to tendons or joints.  These can feel hard like bone.  

H

Haglund's Deformity - painful bony projection on the back of the heel. Commonly irritated by shoe gear. 

Hallux Rigidus/Limitus - reduced movement of the great toe that results in painful arthritis.

Hammertoe - Change in position of the toes, with exception of the big toe, where they are sticking up in the air away from the ground. ( Click here for more information.)

N

Neuroma - benign nerve swelling that results in pain, numbness and tingling into the toes. ( Click here for more information.)

Neuropathy - disease process of  a nerve that results in decreased strength or sensation in the area supplied by the nerve.

O

Onychocryptosis - ingrown toenail.

Onychomycosis - thick discolored, deformed toenails due to fungus. ( Click here for more information.)

P

Paronychia - inflammation of a toenail border due to infection or an ingrown toenail.

Peroneal Tendonitis - inflammation of the peroneal tendon on the outside of the foot or ankle.

Pes Cavus - high arch feet.

Pesplanovalgus - flat feet.

Plantar Fasciitis - pain on the bottom of the heel due to small tears in the plantar fascia ligament. ( Click here for more information.)

Plantar Wart - small hard callus on the foot due to viral infection with HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). More prevalent in children who have been barefoot around community water.

Podiatrist - trained physicians who diagnose and treat foot and ankle pathology.

Posterior Tibial Tendonitis - inflammation of the posterior tibial tendon on the inside of the ankle or arch.

Pronation - a process by which the arch drops to compensate for another deformity in the foot, ankle or leg. 

S

Sesamoiditis - pain and inflammation of an accessory bone on the bottom of the great toe joint. 

Sever's Osteochondrosis - pain in the heel of active growing children due to small microfractures of the growth plate.

Stress Fracture - small incomplete break of a bone.  Usually occurs from repetitive activity over an extended period of time.

T

Tailors Bunion - curvature of the pinky toe towards the big toe w/ a bump noted on the outside of the foot at the base of the pinky toe.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome - pinching of the tibial nerve as it runs around the inside of the ankle.  Similar condition to Carpal Tunnel.  Symptoms are pain, numbness and tingling in the heel, arch or out to the toes.

U

Ulcer - an open sore through all layers of the skin, cause of the sore varies.

Ischemic Ulcer - ulcer due to decreased circulation.

Venous Stasis Ulcer - ulcer in leg due to swelling from poor vein circulation

Pressure Ulcer - ulcer on foot due to areas under pressure for extended period of time.

Neuropathic Ulcer - ulcer due to loss of sensation in feet.
